Book Club: A History of the World in 6 Glasses

The Branigan Cultural Center’s monthly book club, Cultural Connections takes place every third Tuesday from 1pm to 3pm. On August 20, we are discussing Tom Standage’s A History of the World in 6 Glasses. The program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

What is your favorite beverage? According to this illuminating book, your answer reflects the time in which we live. Had you existed 50,000 years ago, you might have enjoyed a refreshing beer made of barley and grain invented by your fellow hunters and gatherers. Wine would have been sipped in Grecian and Roman times while spirits created by distilling that drink would have kept you company as you traveled the high seas. In the seventeenth century, sobriety started the day with a cup of coffee and, as the British Empire expanded, so did the popularity of enjoying a spot of tea. Coca-Cola quenched one’s thirst and need as the world of America’s mass consumerism was established in the late 19th century.

Join us as we raise our glasses and make a toast to the varying civilizations through the drinks that defined each of them!

The Branigan Cultural Center is located at 501 N. Main Street. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm. For more information, contact the Branigan Cultural Center at (575) 541-2154 or visit the Center’s web site at las-cruces.org/museums.
