Paul Bosselait will present a lecture entitled. “HC Tibbitts and the History of Glass Plate Photography,” on Friday, November 18th at 1:00 PM, and again on Saturday, November 19th at 10:00 AM, at the Branigan Cultural Center.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, Bosselait became interested in photography in the 1960s while in high school. He moved to Las Cruces in 1992 and worked at White Sands Missile Range in the calibration lab until 2009 when he retired. He enjoys traveling as well as learning about photography and improving his photography skills.
Photography was revolutionized in the late 1800s by the introduction of the collodion process for making glass negatives. This new technique was faster than previous methods and paper prints could easily be made from glass-plate negatives. One famous photographer who used this technique was Howard Clinton Tibbits. Tibbits traveled through the south west capturing the landscape and people of the area. His photographs were used for postcards and advertising in the early part of the 20th century and are now found in museums, libraries, and private collections across the country.
Bosselait’s talk will focus on Howard Clinton Tibbitts, the history of photography between 1826 and 1839, and the process of glass plate photography.
