Harvey House Construction Updates, RRM, 4/21, 3 pm

The Las Cruces Railroad Museum will host a special presentation at 3pm on Saturday, April 21, by Allan Affeldt. He will present construction updates on the historic Fred Harvey Castenada and Plaza Hotels in Las Vegas, NM.

Affeldt’s work with the Harvey hotels began in 1994 when he founded La Posada Hotel LLC, to purchase and restore La Posada Hotel in Winslow, AZ. La Posada was reopened in 1997 after being closed for forty years. The project has received national recognition as one of the most important rehabilitations in the Southwest, and has been the subject of numerous television documentaries and magazine articles.

Affeldt’s current project is restoration of the Fred Harvey/Santa Fe Railway Castaneda Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico, which was built in 1898. Closed since 1948, the Castaneda is being restored as a historic hotel, restaurant and event space. Additionally, the Plaza Hotel, built in 1882, was purchased out of receivership and will undergo a major overhaul.

Affeldt founded the Winslow Arts Trust and is building an art museum at La Posada. He served on the Board of the Museum of Northern Arizona, the State Board of the Arizona Humanities Council, Arizona Citizens for the Arts, Arizona Town Hall, Arizona Women’s Heritage Trail, The Arizona Centennial Advisory Committee, The Friends of Hubbell Trading Post, and the Winslow Chamber of Commerce. He has been involved in many other restorations including the Winslow Theatre and St Joseph’s Catholic Church.

The museum is located at 351 N. Mesilla Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturday 9am to 4:30pm. For additional information, visit the website at: http://las-cruces.org/museums or call 575.647.4480.
