George R. Matthews will present the March 2015 History Notes lecture at Branigan Cultural Center on Thursday, March 12 at 1pm, entitled Trader, Prisoner, and Governor: David Meriwether’s Roads to New Mexico.
The lecture will examine the history of this New Mexico Territory governor, who came to the state via Kentucky and Virginia.
Mr. Matthews is an independent historian with a Master of Arts in history from NMSU. He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants for his historical research, including the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies Research Grant; the Historical Society of New Mexico and Office of the State Historian Research Fellowship. He is the author of three books with fourth to be published in 2015: Agent for Empire: Zebulon Pike, Thomas Jefferson and the Exploration of the American West. Matthews is also a member of Society of Historians for the Early American Republic, American History Association, Organization for American Historians, Western History Association, Historical Society of New Mexico and Arizona Historical Society.
History Notes, monthly lectures on historical topics, take place on the second Thursday of each month at 1 pm. Lectures are free and open to the public.
