A Place for All People Exhibit Opening Celebration, Sept. 24, 8:00 am Simulcast at Branigan Cultural Center
On September 24, the Smithsonian Institution will open its newest museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The celebration will extend to Las Cruces as Branigan Cultural Center presents a simulcast of the opening ceremonies in the Schwartz Room and opens the exhibit “A Place for All People: Introducing the National Museum of African American History and Culture.”
The Branigan Cultural Center will begin the live simulcast of the event at 8am. Light refreshments will be served and attendees will be invited to participate in interactive discussion about the event. The Las Cruces Museum System is a Smithsonian Affiliate.
The exhibit, “A Place for All People,” highlights key artifacts that tell the rich and diverse story of the African American experience. From the child-size shackles of a slave and the clothing worn by Carolotta Walls on her first day at Little Rock Central High School to Chuck Berry’s Gibson guitar, “Maybellene,” and the track shoes worn by Olympian Carl Lewis, the exhibition presents a living history that reflects challenge, triumph, faith and hope.
Admission to the Branigan Cultural Center is free. The museum is located at 501 North Main Street and is open Tuesday – Friday from 10 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday, 9 am to 4:30 pm. For additional information, visit the website at: http://las-cruces.org/museums or call 575.541.2154.
