Join the Branigan Cultural Center as UTEP professor Dr. Yolanda Chávez Leyva presents, “The Work of a Bracero is Never Done: Remembering La Labor in New Mexico,” on Saturday, September 15 at 12pm.
Born and raised en la frontera, Dr. Yolanda Chávez Leyva is the Director of the Institute of Oral History and the Borderlands Public History Lab at the University of Texas at El Paso. She is also an Associate Professor in the Department of History where she teaches courses in public history, borderlands history, and Mexican American history. She is incoming director of the Liberal Arts Honors Program, and is the recipient of the Herbert Feis Award from the American Historical Association for distinguished contributions to public history.
She has published on the history of Mexican American women and children as well as public history. She is working on a manuscript titled “Interpreting Latinx History in Museums and Historic Sites.” She is the historian with “Voices from the Border,” a new video series highlighting the stories of border people and she is co-founder of Museo Urbano, a museum of the streets that tells the history of the border is venues as diverse as museums and city streets. Museo Urbano received the outstanding public history project award from the National Council on Public History in 2013. She happily blogs at www.fiercefronteriza.com.
