Book Club – “Hot Art: Chasing Thieves and Detectives Through the Secret World of Stolen

The next meeting of the Reading Art Book Club is on Wednesday, August 14 at the Las Cruces Museum of Art. The Book Club is dedicated to exploring the connections between art and literature through reading and discussing books. Selected literature relates to the Museum of Art’s varied exhibitions. Even if you haven’t read this month’s selection, please join us.

Discussion of the July Book Club selection Hot Art: Chasing Thieves and Detectives Through the Secret World of Stolen Art by Joshua Knelman begins at 2:30pm. Hot Art traces Knelman’s five-year immersion in the shadowy world of art theft, where he uncovers a devious game that takes him from Egypt to Los Angeles, New York to London, and then back again, through a web of deceit, violence, and corruption.

The selection for the Wednesday, September 11 meeting is Creation by Katherine Govier In the novel, the author recreates the summer in which artist John James Audubon finally understood the paradox embedded in his art: that the act of creation is also an act of destruction.

Funded by the City of Las Cruces, the Las Cruces Museum of Art is located at 491 N. Main Street, next to Branigan Cultural Center. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The Museum is closed Sundays and Mondays. For more information, call (575) 541-2137 or visit the website www.las-cruces.org/museums
