MoA Reading Art Book Club meets on Wednesday, April 11, at 2:30pm. Video Viewing at 1:30pm.

The Museum of Art Reading Art Book Club meets on Wednesday, April 11, at 2:30pm in the  Museum of Nature and Science, next door to the Museum of Art. The April book selection is The Art of Rivalry: Four Friendships, Betrayals, and Breakthroughs in Modern Art by Sebastian Smee. There will be a video viewing at 1:30pm, prior to the meeting, of Matisse-Picasso, a documentary highlighting each artist’s influence on the other.

In The Art of Rivalry: Four Friendships, Betrayals, and Breakthroughs in Modern Art, Pulitzer Prize–winning art critic Sebastian Smee tells the story of four pairs of artists—Manet and Degas, Picasso and Matisse, Pollock and de Kooning, Freud and Bacon—whose fraught, competitive friendships spurred them to new creative heights. Each of these relationships culminated in an early flashpoint, followed by a rupture in a budding intimacy that was both a betrayal and a trigger for great innovation.

Reading Art Book Club meetings are free and open to the public. Join us even if you haven’t read the book! For more information or for details on book selections, contact Joy Miller at 541-2221 or jmiller@las-cruces.org.

The Museum of Art is located at 491 N. Main Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm. For additional information, visit the website at: http://las-cruces.org/museums or call 575-541-2137.
