Trestle Trail Hike in Cloudcroft

Join the Museum of Nature & Science and the Railroad Museum on Saturday, May 18 as we spend the day hiking the Trestle Trail in Cloudcroft.  Space is limited and pre-registration is required.  There is a cost of $5 per person for this hike and transportation in a City of Las Cruces vehicle is provided.  We will meet at the Museum of Nature & Science at 8:00 am and return by 4:00 pm.

All participants must be able to walk unassisted and bring appropriate gear including sturdy shoes, sun hat, layered clothing, sunscreen, water and a snack.  Hikers are welcome to bring a camera to take pictures of the hike.  The museum will provide transportation, first aid kit and trail guide.  This hike is 5 miles round trip, rated as moderately difficult and will reach elevations of 8,600 feet above sea level.

Cloudcroft is proud to be part of the Rails to Trails project that was organized in 1994.  The Rails to Trails’ mission is to convert abandoned railroad lines located in the Sacramento Mountains of Southern New Mexico into multi-use, multi-access recreational trails.  With the work of an all-volunteer staff, this non-profit organization has combined trails to provide one sixty-eight mile-long loop trail that goes from Cloudcroft to Sunspot to the Oliver Lee Memorial State Park to Alamogordo to La Luz to High Rolls and back to Cloudcroft.

The Trestle Trail takes hikers back into the railroading history of Cloudcroft.  We will begin at the Trestle Recreation Area and the Depot Replica and hike toward Mexican Canyon passing two historic trestles as we travel through the old growth forest of Cloudcroft.

MoNaS is located at 411 North Main Street. For additional information, visit the museums’ website at: las-cruces.org/museums or call (575) 522-3120.
