Women’s Improvement Association: Pioneers in Las Cruces, RRM, 4/25, 11 am

The Las Cruces Railroad Museum is hosting a special lecture at 11am on Wednesday, April 25. Jim Garthwait, NMSU Graduate Student in Museum Studies, will present “Women’s Improvement Association: Playing a Pioneering Role in the History of Las Cruces”. The Women’s Improvement Association (WIA) contributed to the cultural growth of Las Cruces by building the first public park and the first swimming pool in town. The organization was formed in 1894 by Mrs. George W. Frenger.

Garthwait is a graduate student at New Mexico State University, in the Museum Studies Program and has been a long-time volunteer at the Las Cruces Museums. This presentation is part of a Public History course at NMSU.

The museum is located at 351 N. Mesilla Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturday 9am to 4:30pm. For additional information, visit the website at: http://las-cruces.org/museums or call (575) 647-4480.
